SALKANTAY TREK 5 DAYS TO MACHU PICCHU

The best alternative to the Inca Trail: nature, adventure and culture in one journey

Embark on one of the most spectacular hikes in the world: the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu, a route renowned for its natural beauty and deep connection to Andean history.

Over five days, you will explore valleys, turquoise lagoons, snow-capped mountains and tropical forests, culminating at the majestic Inca citadel.

With nearly 30 years of experience operating in Cusco, we offer a safe, well-organised and truly authentic experience.

Día 1:

Cusco – Mollepata – Soraypampa – Humantay Lake

Early departure from Cusco towards the picturesque town of Mollepata, where our adventure begins. After meeting the support team, we start the hike to Soraypampa, surrounded by breathtaking Andean landscapes.

In the afternoon, we visit Humantay Lake, one of the most photogenic sites in the region, with its turquoise waters at the foot of the snow-capped peak of the same name.

We then return to the campsite to enjoy a welcome dinner prepared by our mountain chef.

Hiking time: 5–6 hours

Includes: lunch and dinner

Accommodation: campsite in Soraypampa

Día 2:

Soraypampa – Salkantay Pass – Chaullay

After a nourishing breakfast, we begin the ascent to Salkantay Pass, the highest point of the trek and one of the most spectacular moments of the journey. From here, admire the imposing Salkantay Glacier, considered sacred since Inca times.

We then descend to Huayracmachay for lunch, before continuing to Chaullay, where we spend the night surrounded by the transition from the Andes to the tropical jungle.

Hiking time: 8–9 hours

Includes: breakfast, lunch and dinner

Accommodation: campsite in Chaullay

Día 3:

Chaullay – Collpapampa – La Playa – Santa Teresa

The trek continues through lush green landscapes filled with orchids and waterfalls. This day takes us down into the high jungle, with warmer temperatures and abundant vegetation.

Along the way, you will encounter small local communities and plantations of coffee, bananas and tropical fruits.

At the end of the day, we arrive in Santa Teresa, where you may relax and enjoy the natural hot springs of Cocalmayo (optional).

Hiking time: 6–7 hours

Includes: breakfast, lunch and dinner

Accommodation: tourist lodge in Santa Teresa

Día 4:

Santa Teresa – Hidroeléctrica – Aguas Calientes

After breakfast, we begin the final hiking section towards the Hydroelectric Station, enjoying a mostly flat trail surrounded by lush jungle scenery.

From here, continue on foot or by train (according to your preference) to Aguas Calientes, the town at the base of Machu Picchu.

The afternoon is free to stroll, relax or enjoy dinner at a local restaurant.

Hiking time: 5–6 hours

Includes: breakfast, lunch and dinner

Accommodation: hotel in Aguas Calientes

Día 5:

Machu Picchu – Cusco

The highlight of the journey has arrived. Very early in the morning, we take the bus up to the Machu Picchu citadel, where your expert guide will lead a comprehensive tour of the temples, terraces and sacred enclosures.

You will then have free time to explore independently or hike Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain (optional).
